Intro
פָּרָשַׁת וַיֵּרָא — an open tent, and a father and son walking up a mountain.
Verse 1
In the heat of the day he sat,
sitting at the door of his tent.
Rashi says הַשֵּׁם came to him,
came to visit him while he was sick,
on the third day, still in pain.
Chorus
and the two of them walked together,
together, with one heart.
Verse 2
Rashi says הַשֵּׁם brought out the sun,
out of its sheath, so hot, so bright,
and still he sat beside the door
to see if anyone passed by.
he lifted up his eyes,
and there stood three men.
Chorus
and the two of them walked together,
together, with one heart.
Verse 3
Years go by, a voice is calling,
he hears his name, and he answers,
here I am.
Rashi says, that is how the pious answer,
meek and ready, meek and ready.
Chorus
and the two of them walked together,
together, with one heart.
Verse 4
He rose up early in the morning,
Rashi says, eager to do the command.
He saddled the donkey himself,
no servant, no waiting,
Rashi says, love does not stand on ceremony.
Verse 5
The boy asks, where is the lamb?
הַשֵּׁם will show the lamb, my son.
And Rashi says they walked on
with the same ready heart.
Chorus
and the two of them walked together,
together, with one heart.
Outro

Intro
פָּרָשַׁת וַיֵּרָא — come sit by the tent door. Guests are coming, and a promise that sounds too good to be true.
Chorus
is anything too hard for הַשֵּׁם?
nothing is too hard for הַשֵּׁם.
Spoken Word 1
וַיֵּרָא אֵלָיו הַשֵּׁם — הַשֵּׁם appeared to אַבְרָהָם as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. Rashi says He came to visit the sick, on the third day. Rashi says he sat by the door to see if anyone passed, to invite them in. וְהִנֵּה שְׁלֹשָׁה אֲנָשִׁים — three men stood there. וַיָּרָץ לִקְרָאתָם — he ran to greet them, Sforno says, right from the door.
Cakes of fine flour, a tender calf, and Rashi says he gave it to the young man to prepare, to train him in doing a מִצְוָה.
Chorus
is anything too hard for הַשֵּׁם?
nothing is too hard for הַשֵּׁם.
Spoken Word 2
Next year, said the guest, שָׂרָה will have a son. וַתִּצְחַק שָׂרָה בְּקִרְבָּהּ — she laughed inside, for they were both old. And הַשֵּׁם asked: why did she laugh? Is anything too hard for Me?
The guests looked out toward the wicked cities. יְצַוֶּה אֶת־בָּנָיו — אַבְרָהָם will teach his children, לַעֲשׂוֹת צְדָקָה וּמִשְׁפָּט — to do what is right and just, and Sforno says, to walk in the ways of הַשֵּׁם. So אַבְרָהָם prayed. הֲשֹׁפֵט כָּל־הָאָרֶץ — shall the Judge of all the earth not do justice? Fifty good people, down to ten. וְאָנֹכִי עָפָר וָאֵפֶר — I am only dust and ashes, he said, and each time הַשֵּׁם said yes.
Chorus
is anything too hard for הַשֵּׁם?
nothing is too hard for הַשֵּׁם.
Spoken Word 3
Two angels came to the city in the evening, and לוֹט took them home and fed them. The men of the city surrounded the house, and the angels struck them blind. At dawn לוֹט lingered, so they took him by the hand, with his wife and two daughters, בְּחֶמְלַת הַשֵּׁם עָלָיו — because הַשֵּׁם had pity on him. Fire came down on the wicked cities, and the wife of לוֹט looked back and became a pillar of salt. וַיִּזְכֹּר אֱלֹקִים אֶת־אַבְרָהָם — הַשֵּׁם remembered אַבְרָהָם, and לוֹט was saved. Later a king took שָׂרָה, and a dream made him give her back.
Chorus
is anything too hard for הַשֵּׁם?
nothing is too hard for הַשֵּׁם.
Spoken Word 4
וַהַשֵּׁם פָּקַד אֶת־שָׂרָה כַּאֲשֶׁר אָמָר — הַשֵּׁם remembered שָׂרָה, just as He said. A son, when אַבְרָהָם was a hundred years old, and his name was יִצְחָק. צְחֹק עָשָׂה לִי אֱלֹקִים — הַשֵּׁם has given me laughter, said שָׂרָה.
When הָגָר and her son were sent away, the water ran out in the מִדְבָּר, and she wept. אֶל־קוֹל הַנַּעַר בַּאֲשֶׁר הוּא־שָׁם — הַשֵּׁם heard the voice of the boy, right where he was, and Rashi says a sick person's own prayer is heard more than any other. וַתֵּרֶא בְּאֵר מָיִם — and she saw a well of water. And אַבְרָהָם planted a tree and called out in the Name of הַשֵּׁם.
Chorus
is anything too hard for הַשֵּׁם?
nothing is too hard for הַשֵּׁם.
Spoken Word 5
הִנֵּנִי — here I am, he answered, and Rashi says, meek and ready. Take your son, your only one, whom you love, up a mountain I will show you. Where is the lamb, asked יִצְחָק. אֱלֹקִים יִרְאֶה־לּוֹ הַשֶּׂה — הַשֵּׁם will show the lamb, my son. And the two walked on together, Rashi says, with the same ready heart.
He built the מִזְבֵּחַ and bound his son, and an angel called: אַל־תִּשְׁלַח יָדְךָ אֶל־הַנַּעַר — do not touch the boy. וְהִנֵּה־אַיִל — there was a ram, caught by its horns, and he offered it instead. עֵקֶב אֲשֶׁר שָׁמַעְתָּ בְּקֹלִי — because you listened to My voice, all the nations will be blessed through your children.
Chorus
is anything too hard for הַשֵּׁם?
nothing is too hard for הַשֵּׁם.

This week’s parsha
Avraham sits at the door of his tent in the heat of the day, three strangers appear, and he runs. The parsha moves from that open tent to a promise that makes Sarah laugh, a prayer for Sedom, a baby named Yitzchak, a well in the desert, and ends on a mountain where a father and son walk up together.

Is anything too far removed from Adonoy? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time of life, and Sarah will have a son.
The parsha in brief
Hashem appeared to Avraham in the groves of Mamrei, and Rashi says He came to visit the sick, on the third day after Avraham's bris. Avraham was sitting at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. Rashi says Hashem brought the sun out of its sheath, and that Avraham sat at the door to see if anyone was passing by, so he could invite him in. He lifted his eyes, and there were three men standing near him. He ran to greet them, and Sforno says he started running right from the door of his tent. He bowed to the ground and begged them: please do not pass by. Let a little water be brought to wash your feet, rest under the tree, and I will bring some bread.
Then Avraham hurried. He ran into the tent and told Sarah to quickly bake cakes from three measures of the finest flour. He ran to the cattle and took a tender, choice calf, and Rashi says he gave it to the young man to prepare in order to train him in doing mitzvos. He set butter, milk and the meat before his guests, and stood over them under the tree while they ate. Where is Sarah, they asked. In the tent. At this time next year, said one, Sarah will have a son. Sarah was listening at the door, and she laughed to herself, for she and Avraham were old. Hashem asked: why did Sarah laugh? Is anything too hard for Hashem?
The guests looked out toward Sedom, a city whose people were very wicked, and Hashem told Avraham what He was going to do, because Avraham would teach his children to keep the way of Hashem, doing what is right and just; Sforno says, to walk in Hashem's own ways. Avraham stood and prayed: shall the Judge of all the earth not do justice? Spare the city for fifty good people. Then, calling himself only dust and ashes, he asked for forty-five, forty, thirty, twenty and ten, and each time Hashem said yes. That evening two angels came to Sedom. Lot took them home and fed them; the men of the city surrounded the house, and the angels struck them blind. At dawn Lot lingered, so the angels took him, his wife and his two daughters by the hand and led them out, because Hashem had pity on him. Fire and sulfur came down on Sedom and Amorah, and Lot's wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. Hashem remembered Avraham, and Lot was saved. Later, in Gerar, a king took Sarah, until Hashem warned him in a dream to give her back.
Then Hashem remembered Sarah, just as He had said. At a hundred years old, Avraham had a son, and named him Yitzchak, and gave him his bris at eight days old. Sarah said: Hashem has given me laughter, and everyone who hears will laugh with me. When Hagar and her son were sent away, the water ran out in the desert, and Hagar wept. Hashem heard the voice of the boy, and Rashi says the prayer of a sick person himself is heard more than the prayers of others. Hashem opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. Later Avraham made a treaty with King Avimelech over a well, with seven ewes, and there in Be'er Sheva he planted a tree and called out in the Name of Hashem.
After all this, Hashem tested Avraham. Avraham, He called, and Avraham answered: here I am. Rashi says that is how the pious answer, meek and ready. Take your son, your only one, whom you love, Yitzchak, and bring him up on a mountain I will show you. Avraham rose early in the morning, and Rashi says he was eager to do the command; he saddled his donkey himself, for love does not stand on ceremony. Yitzchak carried the wood and asked, where is the lamb? Hashem will show the lamb, my son, said Avraham, and the two of them walked on together, Rashi says, with the same ready heart. Avraham built the altar and bound his son, and an angel called from heaven: Avraham, Avraham, do not touch the boy. There was a ram caught by its horns in the bushes, and he offered it instead. Because you listened to My voice, said the angel, all the nations of the earth will be blessed through your children.

The whole parsha, aliyah by aliyah
All seven aliyos, in order, with the verse ranges as they are leined. The account of what happens stays to what the pesukim say; anything that explains why is quoted below.
1. Three guests at the tent
Genesis 18:1-18:14
Hashem appears to Avraham in the groves of Mamrei while he sits at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifts his eyes, sees three men standing near him, runs from the tent door to greet them and bows to the ground. He offers a little water to wash their feet, rest under the tree and some bread, then hurries to Sarah to bake cakes from three measures of fine flour, runs to the herd for a tender, choice calf, and serves butter, milk and the calf, standing over them under the tree while they eat. They ask where Sarah is, and he says, in the tent; one says that at this time next year Sarah will have a son. Sarah, listening at the tent door, laughs to herself, for she and Avraham are old, and Hashem asks Avraham why she laughed: is anything too hard for Hashem?
He lifted his eyes and saw, and behold three men were standing over him. He saw [them], and ran from the door of the tent to greet them, and he bowed down to the earth.
Genesis 18:2 2. Avraham prays for Sedom
Genesis 18:15-18:33
Sarah is afraid and denies that she laughed, but she is told that she did. The men rise and look out toward Sedom, and Avraham walks with them to see them off. Hashem says He will not hide from Avraham what He is about to do, for Avraham will command his children and his household to keep the way of Hashem, doing righteousness and justice; the outcry of Sedom and Amorah is great and their sin very grave. Avraham stands before Hashem and asks: will You sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Shall the Judge of all the earth not do justice? He asks Him to spare the city for fifty righteous, then, calling himself dust and ashes, for forty-five, forty, thirty, twenty and ten, and each time Hashem agrees.
For I have given him special attention because he commands his children, and his household after him, and they will preserve the way of Adonoy, doing charity and justice, so that Adonoy will bring upon Avraham all that which He has spoken of him.
Genesis 18:19 3. The angels rescue Lot
Genesis 19:1-19:20
The two angels come to Sedom in the evening while Lot sits at the city gate; he bows, insists they stay the night, and makes them a meal. Before they lie down, the men of Sedom, young and old, surround the house and demand the guests; Lot goes out and pleads with them, and the guests pull him back inside and strike the crowd with blindness. They tell Lot that Hashem has sent them to destroy the place, and his sons-in-law think he is joking. At dawn Lot hesitates, so the angels take him, his wife and his two daughters by the hand and lead them out, because Hashem had pity on him. They tell him to flee to the mountains and not look back, and Lot asks instead to flee to a small town nearby.
He hesitated, and the men grabbed his hand and the hand of his wife and two daughters, for Adonoy had pity on him. They brought him out and placed him outside the city.
Genesis 19:16 4. Sedom falls, Yitzchak is born
Genesis 19:21-21:4
The small town is spared and named Zoar, and as the sun rises Hashem rains sulfur and fire on Sedom and Amorah and overturns the cities; Lot's wife looks back and becomes a pillar of salt. Avraham rises early and sees the smoke rising like a furnace, and Hashem remembers Avraham and sends Lot out. Lot settles in a cave with his two daughters, and from their sons come the nations of Moav and Amon. In Gerar, Avraham says Sarah is his sister and King Avimelech takes her, until Hashem warns him in a dream; he returns her with sheep, cattle, servants and a thousand pieces of silver, and Avraham prays for his household and they are healed. Then Hashem remembers Sarah as He said: she bears Avraham a son in his old age, and Avraham names him Yitzchak and gives him his bris at eight days old.
Adonoy remembered Sarah as He had said, and Adonoy did for Sarah as He had spoken.
Genesis 21:1 5. Laughter, and a well
Genesis 21:5-21:21
Avraham is a hundred years old when Yitzchak is born, and Sarah says Hashem has given her laughter: everyone who hears will laugh with her. When Yitzchak is weaned Avraham makes a great feast. Sarah sees Hagar's son mocking and tells Avraham to send Hagar and her son away; Avraham is distressed, but Hashem tells him to listen to Sarah, for his children will be called through Yitzchak, and Hagar's son too will become a nation. Avraham rises early and sends them off with bread and a skin of water, and in the desert of Be'er Sheva the water runs out; Hagar sets the boy under a bush, sits a bowshot away and weeps. Hashem hears the boy's voice, an angel tells Hagar not to fear, and Hashem opens her eyes to a well of water; the boy grows up in the desert of Paran and becomes an archer.
Elohim heard the voice of the lad. An angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, What is the matter, Hagar? Do not fear. Elohim has heard the voice of the lad in the place where he is.
Genesis 21:17 6. A treaty at Be'er Sheva
Genesis 21:22-21:34
Avimelech and Pichol his general tell Avraham that Hashem is with him in everything he does, and ask him to swear not to deal falsely with them or their children. Avraham swears, and complains about a well that Avimelech's servants had seized; Avimelech says he knew nothing of it until that day. Avraham gives sheep and cattle, the two make a covenant, and Avraham sets aside seven ewes as proof that he dug the well. The place is called Be'er Sheva, because the two swore there. Avraham plants an eshel tree in Be'er Sheva and calls out there in the Name of Hashem, God of the universe.
Avraham planted an eishel [tree] in Beer Sheva, and there he proclaimed the Name Adonoy, Almighty of the universe.
Genesis 21:33 7. The test on the mountain
Genesis 22:1-22:24
Hashem tests Avraham, who answers, here I am, and tells him to take his only son Yitzchak, whom he loves, to the land of Moriah and bring him up as an offering on a mountain He will show him. Avraham rises early, saddles his donkey, takes two young men and Yitzchak, splits the wood and goes, and on the third day he sees the place from afar. Yitzchak carries the wood and Avraham the fire and the knife; Yitzchak asks where the lamb is, Avraham answers that Hashem will show the lamb, and the two walk on together. Avraham builds the altar, arranges the wood and binds Yitzchak, and an angel calls, Avraham, Avraham, do not touch the boy, for now it is known that you fear Hashem; Avraham sees a ram caught by its horns in a thicket and offers it instead of his son. The angel promises that his children will be like the stars and the sand and that all nations will be blessed through them, because he listened, and the parsha ends with the news of Nachor's children, among them Besuel, the father of Rivkah.
He [God] said, Do not touch the lad, nor do anything to [harm] him; for now I know that you are one who fears Elohim and have not withheld your son, your only one, from Me.
Genesis 22:12
From the mefarshim
Every one of these is the mefaresh’s own words, fetched and checked. Not a summary.
1Rashi — Hashem comes to visit the sick
AND THE LORD APPEARED UNTO HIM to visit the sick man. R. Hama the son of Hanina said: it was the third day after his circumcision and the Holy One, blessed be He, came and enquired after the state of his health (Bava Metzia 86b)
Rashi on Genesis 18:1:1
2Rashi — sitting at the door, watching for guests
AT THE TENT-DOOR — that he might see whether anyone passed by, and invite him into the house
Rashi on Genesis 18:1:4
3Rashi — the sun out of its sheath
IN THE HEAT OF THE DAY — The Holy One, blessed be He, brought the sun out of its sheath that he might not be troubled by travellers, and when He perceived that he was grieved that no travellers came He brought to him angels in the form of men (Bava Metzia 86b).
Rashi on Genesis 18:1:5
4Sforno — running from the very door
מפתח האהל, he began running from the entrance of his tent. When a person is observed to perform any task with speed, with keenness, this reflects that he considers what he is about to do as important. We have another example of such conduct in Exodus 34,8 וימהר משה ויקוד ארצה וישתחו, “Moses hastened to bow down and to prostrate himself.”
Sforno on Genesis 18:2:4
5Rashi — training the young man in mitzvos
TO THE YOUNG MAN — This was Ishmael whom he bade to do this in order to train him to the performance of religious duties (in this case the duty of hospitality) (Genesis Rabbah 48:13).
Rashi on Genesis 18:7:2
6Sforno — teaching his children the ways of Hashem
G’d did all of the foregoing in order that Avraham would instruct his sons to emulate the ways of G’d having personal experience of G’d’s great love for mankind, seeing how His love extended even to the wicked.
Sforno on Genesis 18:19:2
7Rashi — a sick person's own prayer
THE VOICE OF THE LAD — From this we may infer that the prayer of a sick person is more effective than the prayer offered by others for him and that it is more readily accepted (Genesis Rabbah 53:14).
Rashi on Genesis 21:17:1
8Rashi — hineni: meek and ready
HERE AM I — Such is the answer of the pious: it is an expression of meekness and readiness (Midrash Tanchuma, Vayera 22).
Rashi on Genesis 22:1:2
9Rashi — up early for a mitzvah
AND HE ROSE EARLY — He was alert to fulfil the command (Pesachim 4a)
Rashi on Genesis 22:3:1
10Rashi — he saddled it himself
AND HE SADDLED [HIS ASS]—He himself: he did not order one of his servants to do so, for love disregards the rule imposed on one by his exalted position in life. (“Love” here means Love of God as displayed in obedience to His command.) (Genesis Rabbah 55:8)
Rashi on Genesis 22:3:2
11Rashi — the same ready heart
THEY WENT BOTH OF THEM TOGETHER — with the same ready heart (Genesis Rabbah 56:4).
